What is Guest Posting?
First things first, guest posting is when you create a blog post or article for another website in your niche. In exchange for new content, the website in question will publish a short bio and a link back to your blog (or “backlink“).
There are some paid guest posting opportunities available with high-authority websites. However, generally speaking, most bloggers will guest post for free.
Why Guest Post?
What are the benefits of guest posting and why write for free on another website when you can just focus your efforts on your own blog? Well, I’ll tell you.1. It Boosts Your Blog’s SEO Score
SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) specialists, such as Moz, claim that guest posting is a powerful link-building technique that can help your blog to rank higher on search engines.Let’s pretend that you’re the Google algorithm for a minute.
Oh, hey, check you out – you’re the Google algorithm. You’re doing your thing, browsing the World Wide Web and matching search engine users to relevant content.
But, what’s this? You keep seeing the same blog link pop up on high-authority websites? And some of these websites have a super high Domain Authority (DA) score? This must mean that the blog that they’re all linking to must also be kind of credible, right?
Right.
Hence, as the Google algorithm, you’re more likely to trust this blog because of all of the SEO link juice. As a result, you’ll move it up in your SERPS and simultaneously increase it’s DA score. Win-win.
If you need a full, detailed breakdown on how to write and optimise blog posts for search engines, the “Superstar Your Blog Post SEO” eBook has got you covered.
2. It Drives Clicks and Conversions
If your blog’s SERPs ranking improves significantly because of guest posting, you’re naturally going to receive more organic traffic. After all, according to Backlinko, the number one organic result is 10x more likely to receive a click compared to the tenth result. And do you know what this click-through might lead to? An increased number of page views and clicks to other posts across your blog. (Squee!)
.
If you manage to establish a relationship with your reader, it may even lead to more conversions (i.e. subscribers to your email list or sales of your digital or physical products).
3. It Builds Blog Recognition
One of the major benefits of guest posting is that it helps to get the word out about your blog.Whether you’re a new or established blogger, working with high-quality websites creates a buzz across the whole blogosphere and puts your blog on the map so-to-speak. This could then lead to endless collaborative opportunities!
Consider it a form of networking, if you will, but in the online space.

4. It Helps You Gain New Readers
If you write a guest post that educates your target audience and provides real value, you can use it to successfully showcase your niche expertise. As an expert and thought leader in your niche, people are more likely going to want to follow you and hear what you have to say. Right?
Essentially, it’s all about gaining new readers for your blog by using strategically-placed guest posts to build trust with your target audience.
5. It Grows Your Online Tribe
Lastly, guest posting on other websites can ultimately lead to new fans and followers on social media in addition to new blog readers.I mean, think about it. You decide to guest post on a blog, the blog owner shares the link to the post on Twitter and then BOOM. All of a sudden, you find yourself with 25 extra followers. (Not to sound like a walking Tesco advert but every little helps!)
It’s all about stepping out of your comfort zone to expand your reach – and grow your online tribe, as a result.
Guest Posting Process
If you’re sold on the benefits of guest posting, there’s nothing stopping you from trying it out yourself. I mean, it’s relatively straightforward to find a blog to guest post on.Personally, what I’ve done in the past is typed [my niche] + [guest post] into good old Google.
Once you see an opportunity that looks suitable, click on the website to try and locate their guest posting requirements. These are usually found on the “Guest Posting” or “Contribute” page and consist of the following:
Post length in terms of word count
Number of images required
Bio length
Specifics when it comes to links you can include (for example, 1x backlink and 1x social media link)
You can then simply reach out to the website via email or their contact form.
That said, it’s important not to just go for the first opportunity you come across.
How to Guest Post
Guest Posting Guidelines
There are certain guest posting guidelines you should follow. The idea is to avoid wasting your time with irrelevant websites or coming across as spammy in Google’s eyes.
Why? Well, this will only harm your SEO score and search engine rankings.
You need to vet every website you plan to guest post for to check that it’s a good fit. To do this, ask yourself the following questions.
1. Is the Content Relevant?
There’s no point posting on a website about dogs if your blog focuses on cats. Know what I mean?Always make sure it’s a mutual collaboration – i.e. the blog owner gets fresh content and you reach your desired audience.
2. Is the Content High in Quality?
This ties in with your blog’s desired positioning as an authority figure. If the website in question has low quality, poorly-written content or accepts guest posts from everybody under the sun on all sorts of topics, it reflects badly on everyone involved. In this case, avoid at all costs.
3. Does the Website Have a Good Amount of Traffic?
There’s no point putting hours of hard work into a guest post if only a handful of people are going to read it.Use a tool like SEMrush to find the website’s traffic statistics and get as many eyeballs on your content as possible.
4. Does the Website Have a Good Level of Engagement?
The blog in question doesn’t need to have a ton of comments on each post. However, if it gets a good reaction across the board (including social media) then this is a good sign. The aim is to reach a loyal audience that will actively engage with your content and build an emotional connection.
5. Does the Website Have a Straightforward Editorial Process?
As I said before, guest posting is a mutual collaboration.Sometimes it’s quite common for blogs to make small editorial tweaks to your content. That said, you should always have full creative control when it comes to the actual copy.
If a fellow blogger seems super difficult to work with and is asking you to make lots of unreasonable changes then I personally wouldn’t go there.
Sure, you’ve got to be prepared that the blog owner could adapt or remove your content in the future without your content. However, if you choose a well-thought-of, authoritative blog in your niche to guest post on in the first place, you can trust that your content is safe and will be looked after now and forever.
The Benefits of Guest Posting are Endless!
Whether you’re looking to boost your blog’s SEO score or simply get your name out there, there are countless benefits of guest posting. That said, don’t just do it for the sake of doing it. Use a guest post to offer value to your target reader, demonstrate your expertise in your niche and be creative and original.
And always remember the “quality over quantity” rule when it comes to guest posting. Blogging on a high-quality website with a high DA score beats blogging on many low-quality websites with low DA scores any day of the week.
Happy guest posting, guys!
